Battle of the ‘Borough hits the court

The new year will be bringing old rivalries back to the OCAA volleyball forefront tonight as the Trent Excalibur take on cross town rivals the Fleming Knights at the Trent University Athletic Complex in Peterborough.

The women’s action will see two teams
with opposite records doing battle in their kick off match to the second half of the season. The lady Excalibur currently sit second to the division leading Cambrian Golden Shield with an 8-2 record while Fleming’s female squad sits second from the basement at 2-8.

Trent remains in the hunt for their first division title and can’t afford a single loss if they hope to topple Cambrian from their perch. Trent would still need some help with some key losses on the Sheild’s behalf.

Trent previously beat Fleming three games to one in the first half of the season.

The men on the other hand will see Trent and Fleming play the rubber match of three in their final meeting of the season.

The Knights beat the Excalibur in four sets in the teams’ first meeting of the season, keeping Trent on the bottom rung of the East division. The Excalibur however did get their revenge, taking a five set marathon at the Knights home invitational tournament.

Despite the need to climb in the standings there is also alot of pride at stake in this final battle of the season. Namely, the bragging rights between former teammates.

The Knights leading scorer Alex Gastle is the former starting left side for Trent for the past two seasons. Even though fleming sits above the Excalibur in the standings Gastle won’t want to let his former team hold the advantage.

In any case both teams will be giving their all as neither can afford the loss if they hope to make up ground to earn a spot in the post season.

The action kicks off at 6pm with the women’s match at the Trent Athletic Complex. The men’s match will begin after the women at 8pm.

  1. UPDATE: The Fleming women lost a hard fought battel to the Excalibur three games to one, while the Trent men stumbled out of the gate and never seemed to be able to regain their feet. Trent fell in straight sets to the Knights keeping them in last place in the division.
